Just enthusiasm and the assumption that "AI makes everything better."

After spending six months deliberately avoiding AI during its hype peak, then diving deep into practical implementation across multiple client projects, I've learned how to separate genuine AI product-market fit from expensive tech demos. The difference isn't about algorithms or training data - it's about understanding what makes people actually pay for AI solutions.

  • "Focus on solving a specific problem with AI" - Start narrow, then expand

  • "Measure usage metrics and retention" - Track engagement like any other product

  • "Get product-market fit first, then scale the AI" - Perfect the core experience before optimization

  • "Use AI to enhance existing workflows" - Don't create new behaviors, improve existing ones

This advice exists because it works for traditional software products. Find a pain point, build a solution, test with users, iterate until people pay and stick around. It's proven, it's logical, and VCs understand it.

But here's where it falls apart with AI: AI products have fundamentally different adoption patterns than traditional software. People don't know how to evaluate AI solutions the same way they evaluate a CRM or project management tool. The value isn't immediately obvious, the learning curve is different, and most importantly - the market is flooded with AI solutions that promise magic but deliver mediocrity.

The conventional PMF playbook assumes rational users making informed decisions about tools they understand. AI throws all of that out the window. Users are simultaneously hyped about AI possibilities and skeptical about AI reality. They want to believe but they've been burned by over-promising tech before.

That's why you need a completely different approach to validating AI product-market fit.

My wake-up call came when I was approached by that marketplace startup. They wanted to "test if their idea works" by building a full AI-powered platform. Classic mistake number one: treating AI validation like traditional product validation.

The client had done their homework on the tech side - they knew about no-code tools, had researched AI APIs, and understood the competitive landscape. But they had zero validation on the demand side. No audience, no pilot customers, no evidence that anyone actually wanted an AI-powered marketplace in their niche.

This wasn't my first rodeo with AI hype. For two years, I deliberately avoided AI projects while everyone else was rushing toward ChatGPT integrations. I wanted to see what AI actually was, not what the marketing promised. When I finally started implementing AI solutions six months ago, I approached it like a scientist, not a fanboy.

My first real test came with an e-commerce client who had over 3,000 products across 8 languages. We needed to generate 20,000+ SEO-optimized pages. Traditional content creation would have taken months and cost a fortune. AI seemed like the obvious solution, but I needed to prove it would actually work before committing.

  5. Find your AI-native advantage - The winning move isn't "faster/cheaper" but "impossible without AI." Look for capabilities that only emerge at AI scale.

  6. Validate outcomes, not features - People don't buy AI, they buy results that happen to be powered by AI.

  7. The 90% rule applies - If your AI isn't 90% as good as human experts in your domain, you're not ready for market.

The biggest mistake I see is founders building AI products for themselves rather than for real market demand. Just because you can build impressive AI doesn't mean anyone wants to pay for it.
