This conventional wisdom exists because it works for consumer apps and platforms with massive scale. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok — they need millions of users to find the ones who'll stick around and eventually monetize.
The problem? Most B2B SaaS products aren't Facebook. You don't need millions of users. You need hundreds or thousands of the right users who will pay you monthly for years.
When you optimize for maximum signups, you're optimizing for the wrong metric. You're bringing in people who have no intention of paying, no real problem to solve, and no commitment to learning your product. These users don't just fail to convert — they actively pollute your retention data and make it impossible to understand what actually works.
The conventional approach treats symptoms (low conversion rates) rather than the disease (wrong audience). What if the solution isn't making your MVP more accessible, but making it more selective?

When I started working with this B2B SaaS client, their situation looked familiar. They'd built a solid product that solved a real problem for project management teams. The features worked, the UI was clean, and early customers loved it.

Step 4: Created Commitment Mechanisms
We required users to invite at least one team member and create their first real project with actual data before accessing certain features. No more demo data or placeholder content.
Step 5: Built Smart Triggers
Rather than time-based nurturing emails, we built behavior-triggered messages. If someone hadn't completed setup after 48 hours, they got a specific email about overcoming that exact obstacle.
The key insight: friction isn't always bad. Strategic friction acts as a filter, ensuring that only people with real intent make it through your funnel. The ones who do are much more likely to become paying customers.

The biggest lesson? Your MVP should be lovable to your ideal customer, not to everyone. If you're optimizing for universal appeal, you're probably optimizing for nobody.
