This advice exists because it works perfectly for traditional content strategies. When you're publishing 5-10 pages per month, manually tracking 100 keywords is manageable. SEO agencies love this approach because it creates beautiful client reports with clear position charts and ranking movements.
But here's where this conventional wisdom completely breaks down: it assumes you're working with human-scale content volumes. When you're generating thousands of AI pages targeting long-tail keywords, traditional rank tracking becomes not just impractical - it becomes impossible.
