Try to automate everything at once - Because AI should handle complexity, right?
Expect it to work perfectly from day one - After all, it's "intelligent" automation
Get frustrated when it breaks - Then blame the platform or give up entirely
Conclude that AI automation isn't ready - And go back to manual processes
This conventional wisdom exists because that's how we think about traditional automation tools like Zapier or Make. We're used to linear, predictable workflows where A leads to B leads to C.
But here's where this approach falls short with AI-powered platforms: AI automation isn't just fancy Zapier. It's fundamentally different because the AI component introduces variability and decision-making that linear thinking can't handle.

My first real test with Lindy came when a client needed to automate their customer feedback analysis. They were drowning in survey responses, support tickets, and user interviews - exactly the kind of unstructured data that AI should handle beautifully.

Step 1: The Single-Function Test
Before building anything complex, I create a workflow that does exactly one thing well. For the feedback analysis project, this meant building a workflow that only categorized feedback into three buckets: Positive, Negative, Neutral. That's it.
This might seem overly simple, but here's why it works: you immediately discover how your AI model responds to your specific data. You learn about edge cases, formatting issues, and prompt reliability without the complexity of multiple processing steps masking the problems.
Step 2: Data Flow Mapping
Once the single function works reliably, I map out how data actually flows through the system. Not how I think it should flow - how it actually does. I run the simple workflow with 100+ real data points and document every variation I see.
This reveals patterns you'd never anticipate. In the feedback project, I discovered that customer emails often contained multiple distinct pieces of feedback in one message. My original approach would have lost this nuance entirely.
Step 3: Progressive Complexity
